University of Alabama wins 3rd straight wheelchair basketball national championship

The University of Alabama Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team won its third consecutive national championship by defeating the University of Wisconsin Whitewater 58-56 in a playoff tournament in Arlington, Texas, on March 13. The team completed the season with a record of 24 wins and 8 losses. This marked the fourth straight year that Alabama advanced to the finals, winning the national championship for the last 3 years.

UA athletic department welcomes visitors from Japan

The University of Alabama’s athletic department will have some far-traveled guests with them for the next few days. Coach Makoto Ohashi is the coach of the Obic Seagulls. They won Japan’s 2010 National football championship so some call him the Japanese version of Nick Saban.

‘Culturally Speaking’ program seeks students for summer

Students looking to engage and examine other cultures have the opportunity to sign up for the Culturally Speaking program that will be offered in both summer school sessions. Culturally Speaking is an English Language Institute class that is part of the intensive English program for overseas students. Frannie James, a professor in the international honors college and global studies certificate program said ELI students aren’t the same as exchange students. James said ELI students are at the University specifically to learn and study the English language, whereas exchange students are enrolled in courses. The goal of the participating UA student and ELI student, however, is similar, James said. “The overall idea of Culturally Speaking to try to get everyone to understand more about other cultures,” she said. “Everyone involved is looking to expand their knowledge and awareness other cultures, to find similarities and differences.”…

University of Alabama Wheelchair Athletics and the local Cold Stone Creamery are hosting a 5k run to benefit the UA men’s and women’s wheelchair basketball teams Saturday at noon, beginning at the Cold Stone location near campus on University Blvd. As part of the event, participants will eat some Cold Stone products midway through the race.
