The Faith and Politics Institute’s Civil Rights Pilgrimage
The Faith and Politics Institute held their annual Civil Rights Pilgrimage in Alabama on March 1, 2013. The pilgrimage brought U.S. Congressmen to Tuscaloosa to see historic Foster Auditorium, and to hear from Dr. Sharon Malone, sister of Vivian Malone Jones, and Mrs. Peggy Wallace Kennedy, daughter of former Alabama Governor George C. Wallace.

UA Leads Multi-Institute Research of Oklahoma Tornado Damage
The University of Alabama is the lead on a research grant to study the damage left by the tornado that struck Moore, Okla., to understand whether past tornadoes influenced building practices to better withstand future events. As part of the grant, the research team is also studying whether social media and engineering can combine to influence future building practice.
UA to Commemorate 50th Anniversary of the Stand in the Schoolhouse Door
Fifty years after the first two African-American students enrolled at The University of Alabama following then Gov. George Wallace’s unsuccessful “Stand in the Schoolhouse Door,” UA will commemorate that historic day and celebrate 50 years of progress with two public events – a program featuring speakers and musical performances on June 11 and an interfaith prayer breakfast on June 7.

Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society Inducts Members at UA
he University of Alabama chapter of Phi Kappa Phi honor society inducted some new 179 members in an initiation ceremony held recently on campus. Phi Kappa Phi membership is by invitation only to the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students and the top 7.5 percent of juniors. Faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinctions also qualify.
