Dr. Michael Steinberg, a University of Alabama researcher, is conducting a study of the coastal mangrove forests in Cuba’s Zapata Peninsula and in two national parks. The study uses satellite maps of the park’s coastal mangrove forests from the past 40 years to examine the forests growth or decline during that time frame.
Sixteen University of Alabama undergraduate researchers have received recognition through the Randall Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award Program. The program recognizes the best research activity conducted by UA undergraduates, who are nominated by faculty and staff research directors.
The University of Alabama’s Senior Army Reserve Officer Training Corps, Crimson Tide Battalion, will hold a commissioning ceremony at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at Ferguson Center Theatre. The event is free and open to the public.
The University of Alabama will hold its spring commencement exercises May 6-7 at Coleman Coliseum on the UA campus.

The Rural Medical Scholars Program at the College of Community Health Sciences will honor the graduates of its 20th class, as well as alumni of the now two-decade-old program, on Sunday, May 1, at Hotel Capstone on The University of Alabama campus. A reception for program alumni will be at 3 p.m. and will be followed by the 20th Annual Rural Scholars Convocation, where the current classes of the Rural Medical Scholars and Rural Community Health Scholars will be recognized.
The University of Alabama chapter of Order of Omega recently announced award and scholarship recipients and initiated new officers at its annual Greek awards banquet in Tuscaloosa. Order of Omega is the national honorary for fraternity and sorority members.
