Harper Lee Prize Goes to Boies Schiller Counsel: 12th book in series takes top honor

Boies Schiller Flexner lawyer James Grippando has won the seventh annual Harper Lee Prize for Legal Fiction for his book Gone Again, the 12th in his Jack Swyteck series, about the adventures of a Miami criminal defense attorney … The prize is awarded by the ABA Journal and the University of Alabama School of Law. Harper Lee, who studied law at the university, authorized the prize’s creation to mark the 50th anniversary of the publication of To Kill a Mockingbird.

Amid Charlottesville backlash, some are asking if statue removal push has gone too far

Since the violent clashes in Charlottesville earlier this month, the debate over removing Confederate monuments is sparking other controversies … “Removing these statues facilitates people forgetting about the bad old days,” Alfred Brophy, a professor at the University of Alabama School of Law, told Fox News. “We have this idea that it is all about morals, but you have to contextualize these issues.”

UA professor and students return from Texas after studying hurricane
WVUA (Tuscaloosa) – Aug. 28
A University of Alabama Geography professor Jason Senkbeil and two of his students returned Sunday from Victoria, Texas where they experienced Hurricane Harvey first hand. The goal of their trip was to conduct research to improve communication about severe weather and to study why some residents in the storm’s path choose to evacuate, while others choose to stay.
 
Atlanta History Center to host panel on Confederate statues

The Atlanta History Center will host a panel discussion, “Confederate Memorials: De-Mythologizing the Iconography of the South ,” at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Margaret Mitchell House … Confirmed speakers include Regina Bradley, Kennesaw State University;  James A. Weekend string music camp for adults starts Friday
Tuscaloosa News – Aug. 28
A string music camp for adults begins at 2 p.m. Friday and runs through noon Sunday, through the University of Alabama’s Community Music School. Workshops will be held in UA’s Moody Music Building. It’s designed as a weekend study for adult amateur string players, in violin, viola, cello and string bass. Those interested in attending can register on site, up until Saturday morning.

While he is busy in trying to remain focused in preparing for top five ranked Florida State, Hurts is also dealing with knowing that his hometown of Houston is facing a flooding disaster.

Sororities are full of diverse members and there’s certainly a home for you even if you’re not the loudest voice in the room … “Chapters are very large, so even if you’re not the in the chapter you originally thought you would be in, there’s going to be someone in that chapter you can click with or befriend. Even if, especially early on in the week, you’re not back in the chapters you originally thought you would really love, give the other ones a chance,” says Morgan Patrick, Director of Recruitment and a senior at The University of Alabama, which has the largest sorority membership in the nation.
