UA students help clean up Alberta

University of Alabama students donned work gloves and got dirty Sunday afternoon in residential Alberta, where debris from the April 27 tornado still fills lots. More than 100 students participated in the first Student Government Association Sunday Student Initiative. Groups of students will meet at the Tuscaloosa Area Volunteer Reception Center every Sunday and receive assignments to work in different tornado-stricken areas from noon until 4 p.m. each week.

UA homecoming queen named

The 2011 homecoming queen was announced just before the University of Alabama’s homecoming bonfire tradition was reignited Friday night. Emily McLaughlin of Montgomery, a senior majoring in nursing, was elected queen. She is a member of the Phi Mu sorority. Each year, UA students select the queen in a general election. This year’s election was held Tuesday. Voting was conducted online and 8,245 votes were cast. McLaughlin will be crowned at halftime of the homecoming football game between Alabama and Vanderbilt University today. The following students, all seniors, were selected as members of the 2011 UA Homecoming Court: Erika Baranek of Gloucester, Va., a communication studies major sponsored by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee;  Coresa Nancy Hogan of Birmingham, a marketing major and member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority;  Fernanda Lima of Douglasville, Ga., an accounting major sponsored by the University Honors Program Mary Talley of Orlando, Fla….

UA students hope to make their Marx on comedy

…Student actors in the University of Alabama production of the Marx Brothers’ “Animal Crackers” hope to learn from performers who honed their techniques during endless grueling nights in vaudeville…Director Seth Panitch, associate professor of acting at UA, wants to use the process of re-creating “Animal Crackers,” which was developed on stage before becoming the 1930 film, to help actors learn classic comedy techniques…
