Pulitzer Prize winner visits the Capstone

Thomas Friedman, New York Times columnist and Pulitzer Prize-winning author, will visit the University Feb. 22. Friedman, three-time recipient of the Pulitzer Prize and author of five bestselling books, including “From Beirut to Jerusalem,” “The World is Flat,” and his most recent, “Hot, Flat, and Crowded,” will speak to students in a question-and-answer format in the afternoon before delivering an evening lecture open to the public. The question-and-answer session titled “A Conversation with Thomas Friedman” will occur between 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. in the Ferguson Theater…Friedman’s evening talk will begin at 7 p.m. in Sellers Auditorium of the Bryant Conference Center and will focus on the topic “Hot, Flat, and Crowded.” Tickets are free but limited and are available through the website www.crimsonartstickets.com…

Sponsored by the Women’s Resource Center, the School of Library and Information Studies and Gender and Race Studies, the event will honor African-American Heritage Month and host Geraldine Bell, a 1977 graduate of the University of Alabama. ROTC trains at middle school

The University of Alabama Reserve Officers Training Corps first and second year students are getting an opportunity to use Westlawn Middle School for training exercises. According to ROTC Cadet Kirby Thornton, the city of Tuscaloosa was planning to tear down the facility, so the ROTC is now able to use the school for training purposes. This is the first year ROTC students have had the opportunity to train in this type of setting…

Date Auction generates more than $10,000

Students packed the North End Zone of Bryant-Denny Stadium Wednesday night to attend the third annual Date Auction, sponsored by the Student Government Association and the UA chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers. Twenty-five auctionees marketed themselves to a floor full of students who raised a total of about $10,500, whereas last year’s auction raised around $6,000, said Mark David Kennedy, SGA treasurer and one of the auctionees…Seventy-five percent of the proceeds will go to the Endowment Fund for student scholarships, while the other 25 percent was awarded to students who attended the auction…
UA introduces “Suit Your Needs” program

…The Alabama Chapter of the Society for Marketing Professional Services’ annual “The Clients Talk Back” luncheon at the Vestavia Country Club also offered advice to firms to put themselves in a better position to win projects …Vincent Dooley, contract specialist with the University of Alabama, said after the proposals have been whittled down and the interviews start, firms should send the team that will be doing the work and not the CEO for the interview. Also, the firms shouldn’t bait and switch by interviewing with one team and using another when the work starts …Dooley said Alabama is building the first phase of its North Bluff student housing project and will likely start on the second phase of the $60 million project by the end of this year. A $15 million to $17 million recreation center will also be part of the project in the future. He said the university is also eyeing a number of projects to make older buildings more energy efficient…

Every Wednesday night, retail managers and supervisors at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa volunteer two hours to help educate local elementary students. Bama Dining, operated by Aramark, began the program in the fall of 2009 to show its appreciation and dedication to its employees and their families. The free tutoring program is open to any child or grandchild of a Bama Dining employee. The tutoring program has been very successful over the past two years…
