Ivey encourages people to pray for people affected by Harvey

In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey’s devastation across Texas, Alabama officials are offering help. During a tour of Tuscaloosa on Wednesday, Gov. Kay Ivey said that the state dispatched two Chinook helicopters, two medical evacuation aircraft and crews to assist in the recovery efforts in Texas … The governor on Wednesday visited the University of Alabama campus, Verner Elementary School, the Tuscaloosa Career and Technology Academy and the Richard A. Curry Jr. environmental services center.

Governor Ivey to visit Tuscaloosa Wednesday

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey will be in Tuscaloosa Wednesday to continue her “Listen, Learn, Help, & Lead Tour.” According to the Governor’s Office, the purpose of the tour is to learn the needs of the community through site visits and a roundtable discussion with local government and business leaders.

Alabama job growth expected to pick up the pace in 2017

A new report shows that Alabama will have slightly higher job growth this year than in 2016. The Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Alabama found in their quarterly economic outlook that the state is projected to create between 25,000 and 30,000 new jobs this year. This shows a gain of 1.5 percent jobs in 2017 for the state, compared to a 1 percent increase in 2016.

UA art students selected to build a sculpture for Shelby Park

Two University of Alabama art students have been selected to build an art sculpture for the public to enjoy at Shelby Park in Tuscaloosa. Ringo Lisko and Amber Daum are collaborating with the city and PARA to create a sculpture to help beautify Shelby Park.

Atlanta History Center to host Confederate memorial discussion

In response to the continuing controversy surrounding Southern monuments, the Atlanta History Center in Buckhead Aug. 28 announced it will host a panel discussion, “Confederate Memorials: De-Mythologizing the Iconography of the South,” Sept. 11 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Margaret Mitchell House in Midtown … Confirmed speakers include Regina Bradley, an assistant professor of English and African diaspora studies at Kennesaw State University; James A. Crank, an assistant professor of American/Southern literature and culture at the of the University of Alabama.

Explore Better Together connects students of different faiths
Crimson White – Aug. 31
UA Crossroads and UA Better Together hosted a discussion to connect students with various religious and secular beliefs on Tuesday night in the Ferguson Center Great Hall. The event, called Explore Better Together, allowed students to experience “speed faithing,” where students alternated between different tables set up for various beliefs and representatives of different faiths would give students a brief summary of their religious or secular beliefs and traditions. Some of the beliefs represented were Judaism, Mormonism, Catholicism, Protestantism, Islam, Hinduism and Secularism.

Over 100 new faculty/staff join the University

The University of Alabama continuously hires new faculty and staff, and this year was no different. In recent months, the University has added new members in almost all departments. “This list [of new faculty and staff] includes both replacement hires (for faculty who, for example, have resigned or retired) and new position hires,” said Chris Bryant, assistant director of media relations in reference to a list of new hires that he provided to The Crimson White.
