Plans approved for UA performing arts center on Bryce campus

The University of Alabama System board of trustees on Nov. 3 approved plans for a new $60 million performing arts center on the campus of historic Bryce Hospital. According to the Tuscaloosa News, the 130,088-square-foot center will connect to the north side of historic main Bryce Hospital building, currently being renovated for use by the school’s theater and dance department. The building is also set to house museums for UA and the Alabama Department of Mental Health.

Understanding Horrible Bosses

Dr. Peter Harms enjoys the dark side of human behavior. The Culverhouse College of Commerce assistant professor of management likes it so much that his recent research delves into understanding the behaviors portrayed by leaders shown in movies like “Horrible Bosses” and “Horrible Bosses 2.” In his research, Harms examines three types of leaders in the workplace—the narcissist, the Machiavellian, and the psychopath—much like the characters of Jennifer Aniston, Collin Farrell, and Kevin Spacy in the two “Horrible Bosses” movies.
 
Painting the Political Picture: Editorial Cartoons in Alabama

Alabama was a popular destination for those seeking the presidency this year. Republicans and Democrats made it a point to visit the Yellowhammer State to try and keep it red or turn it blue. This of course means news coverage, which in turn, brings out cartoonists. If you follow sites like Al-dot-com you’ll see the work of one man in particular … That is what many cartoonists do; they lampoon prominent figures and highlight particular issues. Wilson Lowery is a journalism professor at the University of Alabama and a former cartoonist. He says no one has ever been truly safe from satirists.
 
Future of State Parks at stake with Amendment 2

Voters in Alabama and the rest of the country head to the polls tomorrow to help determine the next President of the United States.  But that won’t be the only issue citizens in the Yellowhammer State have on the ballot.  APR’s MacKenzie Bates has more on the issue known as “Amendment 2.” … A recent study from the University of Alabama says state parks have a 375 million dollar economic impact on the state.  By keeping the money intact, Scofield calls that a terrific return on their investment.

New report examines elections potential effects on Ed Policy

A new report from the University of Alabama’s Education Policy Center examines how state-level education leaders view the education policies of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. The report is based on the first 36 responses received from the 2016 National Survey of Access and Finance Issues conducted by the EPC. That survey found that most higher education leaders disagreed with the “skin in the game” idea that federal loans should be a partnership between students, local banks and colleges. The idea has been supported by Trump.

Veteran to Speak on Post-Service Counseling

(David Albright, Ph.D., an associate professor and Hill Crest Foundation Endowed Chair in Mental Health at the University of Alabama School of Social Work, will deliver the Graduate School of Social Service Centennial Lecture on Fri., Nov. 11 at 3:30 p.m. in the Costantino Room at Fordham Law School. The event will be followed by a centennial celebration for alumni and friends of GSS.) What are the parallels between social work, military service, and Jesuit service? The Jesuits were founded by a soldier, St. Ignatius. Serving others is central both to the mission of service members and social workers.

UA museums offer free admission on Veterans Day to veterans

Veterans Day is this week and some Tuscaloosa groups are planning special events for the holiday. The University of Alabama museums will be offering free admission to all veterans and their family members. Museums participating are the Alabama Museum of Natural History, Gorgas House Museum, Moundville Archaeological Park, and the Mildred Westervelt Warner Transportation Museum.

UA Crimsonette is Sports Illustrated cheerleader of the week
WHNT-CBS (Huntsville) – Nov. 7
For the first time ever, a University of Alabama Crimsonette is the Sports Illustrated Cheerleader of the Week. This is Paige Robertson. She is from Priceville. She did a Q& as part of receiving the distinction. In it, she says she loves to listen to any song she can dance to, loves watching Game of Thrones, and she also says she can sink a half-court basketball shot backwards.
