14 UA students chosen for Fulbright program
Crimson White – June 9
Every year, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program gives graduates the opportunity to conduct research or teach abroad. This year, 14 graduates were chosen from The University of Alabama, the largest number in UA history. “[The Fulbright Program] is a once in a lifetime opportunity: 11,000 students apply and only 16 get accepted,” said Beverly Hawk, a Fulbright program advisor and director of program services in the Center for Community-Based Partnerships who was a Fulbright winner herself. Teresa Wise, UA associate provost for international education and global outreach, said the record-breaking number of recipients reflects well on the University. “The more Fulbright students a university has, the better quality of the university,” Wise said. Fulbright award winners receive grants that include round-trip transportation, health care benefits and maintenance for an academic year. “Doing this program at a young age is great because it is fully-funded,” said Megan Wagner, Capstone International Center coordinator. Jenna Reynolds, a UA graduate with degrees in Spanish and philosophy, won a teaching award through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. She plans on teaching high school English in Spain. “The [Fulbright] program gives me the opportunity to promote an understanding between two cultures,” she said.

Harper Lee misses induction into Alabama Writers Hall of Fame
GulfLive.com – June 9
“To Kill a Mockingbird” author Harper Lee missed her induction as an inaugural member of the Alabama Writers Hall of Fame on Monday just weeks before the release of her second book. Organizers said the 89-year-old Lee couldn’t attend the event, held on the University of Alabama campus. There was no other explanation for Lee’s absence, but she only rarely makes public appearances. The author is in declining health and lives in an assisted-living home 150 miles away in the south Alabama town of Monroeville. “We are so sorry she couldn’t make it,” said Jeanie Thompson, executive director of the Alabama Writer’s Forum, a sponsor of the event. Lee and 11 other Alabama writers were honored as the hall’s first class. Relatives and friends filled two banquet tables set aside for Lee’s party, but organizers said members of the writer’s family declined to speak to reporters. Lee’s second book, “Go Set a Watchman,” is being released in July. It was written before the Pulitzer Prize-winning “Mockingbird” but takes place 20 years later.

Excited dad mows Alabama A into yard to celebrate son’s acceptance into University of Alabama
Al.com – June 9
It’s certainly common for parents to support the college that their child chooses to attend. Most of the time, they express it by wearing tee shirts, hoodies and hats with the school’s logo. One decided to take things to another level. The father of a high school senior named Pearce O’Donnell, as you’ll see below, mowed and painted Alabama’s “Script A” logo into his front lawn. A friend of the family posted a photo of the masterpiece to Twitter. According to O’Donnell, his father was excited that his son, the oldest in the family, got a sizable scholarship to Alabama. His mother also attended the university. The logo was first outlined with spray paint, and later mowed in.
