William Rabel, a professor at the University of Alabama’s Culverhouse College of Commerce, has been named the recipient of the Asia-Pacific Risk and Insurance Association’s 2014 Kyobo Life Contribution Award. The annual award recognizes a lifetime commitment to the association and risk management discipline. The award will be presented at the group’s annual meeting in Moscow. Rabel will not be able to attend so a video of his acceptance will be shown. Rabel holds an endowed chair in insurance and financial services at UA.
Fan Day gives supporters chance to meet Alabama players, coaches today

Are you ready for some football? Today is Fan Day, the University of Alabama’s annual event that allows fans to watch practice inside Bryant-Denny Stadium and then get autographs of their favorite coaches and players afterward. University of Alabama football players and coaches, including head coach Nick Saban, will be available for a 45-minute autograph session after today’s open practice at Bryant-Denny Stadium as part of UA’s annual Fan Day activities. The two-hour practice session is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m., with the autograph session starting at about 4:45. Fan Day is free and open to the public. Fans will be able to enter the stadium starting at 1:30 p.m. through gate 44 and sit in the lower bowl in sections AA-NN for the practice. At the conclusion of practice, fans can enter the field through gate 31 and exit through gate 44. Those who wish to skip the practice viewing to start lining up early for the autograph session can congregate at gate 31 starting at 1:30 p.m.
Alabama football: Sabans distribute $440,000 through Nick’s Kids

Alabama coach Nick Saban and wife Terry distributed more than $440,000 to 125 organizations during their eighth annual Nick’s Kids luncheon on Thursday inside Bryant-Denny Stadium. Since arriving in Tuscaloosa back in 2007, the Saban’s have donated more than $4.6 million through Nick’s Kids. “We have a tremendous amount of appreciation for all the people who work everyday and give their lives to helping the kids,” Saban said. “Those are the people that really should be the heroes here today.” Along with Saban and other Alabama officials, fifteen Tide players signed autographs for children including: Arie Kouandjio, Brian Vogler, Jalston Fowler, Landon Collins, Geno Smith, Blake Sims, Robert Foster, Jarrick Williams, Derrick Henry, Dalvin Tomlinson, Christion Jones, Maurice Smith, Ryan Kelly, DeAndrew White and Austin Shepherd. “I think our players understand the importance of giving back to the community,” Saban said. “It speaks as a part of leadership to try to affect other people and help them, to care about them and to serve them. That’s something that we try to teach our players.”
Narashino Students visit Moundville Archaeological Park

The students arrived in Tuscaloosa July 25th as part of the Tuscaloosa Sister Cities International Exchange Program. They will go on excursions each day until they return home Aug. 4.

A convention was called in Tuscaloosa to take steps to have the road from Tuscaloosa to Florence designated as one of the state or trunk highways of Alabama, as promoted by the act of 1911 creating a highway commission. … The high standard of scholarship and efficiency maintained at the University of Alabama law school was recognized by the Carnegie foundation and the dean of the school, Dr. A. J. Farrah, was honored. Dr. Farrah, together with the deans of four other law departments of great universities, was invited by the foundation to go to New York and to advise on the betterment of legal education in America. The other schools whose deans were called were Harvard, University of Chicago, Leland Stanford, and Columbia University. Having the dean of the University of Alabama along with the four other great law schools of the country was considered an exceptionally high honor.
