Friedman discusses sustainability

Green is the new red, white and blue, Thomas L. Friedman said before a packed house at the Bryant Conference Center on Wednesday night. A three-time Pulitzer Prize-winner, Friedman is a reporter and columnist for the New York Times and the author of five books. In an hour-long lecture called “Hot, Flat, and Crowded,” after his 2008 book of the same name, Friedman urged those in the audience to move past the political debate about global warming and begin a “green revolution” based on doing what’s right for the environment and supporting innovation in the search for “abundant, cheap, clean and reliable electronics.”…

Alabama, Auburn SGAs to announce joint project

The Student Government Associations of Auburn University and the University of Alabama will hold a news conference today on a joint venture between students at both schools. The news conference will be at 1 p.m. in front of Samford Hall on Auburn’s campus. The project is planned for both campuses and “will create a permanent and visible representation of a mutual respect for our age-old rivalry,” a statement released by SGA presidents Kurt Sasser of Auburn and James Fowler of Alabama states. The two SGA presidents last week released a joint statement condemning the poisoning of two 130-year-old live oaks at Toomer’s Corner in Auburn.

Safe Zone Program to discuss harassment issues

The UA Safe Zone Program is hosting a brown bag session today from noon until 1 p.m. in Manly Hall Room 102. The workshop, called “Harassment: What It Looks Like, How to Prevent It, Where to Report It,” will discuss the types of harassment that take place on the University’s campus and ways faculty and staff can help prevent them. Renee Wells, an English professor at the University and chair of the UA Safe Zone Committee, said the program aims to help faculty and staff members know how to respond when students come to them with issues concerning harassment…

New Subway to open in Alston Hall by July

The development around Alston and Bidgood Halls is scheduled to be finished in July and will culminate in opening a new dining center, according to officials in the University’s construction administration office. “The project is to build a food service very similar in concept to Stewart’s Corner in Lloyd, featuring a Subway and a coffee venue,” said Tim Leopard, assistant vice president of construction administration and financial affairs…

Capstone Hero program accepting applications

The Capstone Hero awards began in 2007 as a way to honor individuals and organizations whose contributions to life at the Capstone personify the values found in the Creed. Group bridges gap between generations

…In the summer of 2009, senior Benton Atchison met with the then president of Alpha Lambda Delta Honor fraternity, Will Brome, to strategize the launch of Re: Generation, a program designed to connect the elderly with younger cohorts. “The idea for Re: Generation stems from spending time with my great-grandmother when she was in a nursing home,” Atchison said. “Oftentimes during my visits, other residents were just as thrilled to see me as my great-grandmother. I began to realize that a lot of them had limited connection with the outside world or, in far too many situations, their own family.” Atchison and Brome coordinated a lunch for September 2009 at Forest Manor Nursing Home in Northport, with 50 UA students participating…

University Stewards now recruiting for fall semester

…University Stewards is an organization founded to assist with the recruitment process of prospective students, President-elect Maria Fernandez said…Additionally, Stewards travel to receptions across the nation with the admissions office and speak to prospective students about why they chose to come to Alabama and the opportunities Alabama has to offer…Currently, there are 40 members of University Stewards, Phillips said.
