Special interest groups hedge bets with GOP, Dems
Anniston Star – Oct. 29
Because control of the Alabama Legislature could change after the November elections, some special interest groups appear to be spreading money to candidates of both state parties… “They all want to have allies no matter which party is in control,” said William Stewart, professor emeritus of political science at the University of Alabama. With anti-Democrat fervor on the national level plus Alabamians’ long-time trend toward supporting Republicans, many experts, including Stewart, see the November election as one of the best opportunities yet for the GOP to take control of at least one state House — a feat the party has not done since Reconstruction. “This is the best chance Republicans have had to take control of the Legislature in 136 years, Stewart said. “I think they might gain control of the House.”…Stewart said Republicans typically spend more than Democrats since their funding sources tend to be wealthier. However, he added that the large spending differences between the two parties may also be due to Republicans being more energized about the election. “If you are stirred up about an election, you might be encouraged to write out a bigger check to a candidate,” he said.
