Sparks, Bentley to debate Thursday

The first of two televised college campus debates between gubernatorial candidates Robert Bentley and Ron Sparks will be held Thursday night in the Moody Music Building at the University of Alabama. Free tickets to the event are being given to students and faculty. The general public will have to watch it on TV or listen to it on the radio…Debbie Elliott, a UA graduate and National Public Radio correspondent, will be the moderator. The main sponsors of the one-hour debate are the student government associations at UA and Auburn University and the League of Women Voters chapters in Tuscaloosa and Auburn, where the second debate will be held Oct. 19. “This is the brainchild of the SGA at the University (of Alabama), and they have asked us to join them because we have so much experience in putting on debates,” said Kathryn Byrd, co-president of the Alabama League of Women Voters and member of the Tuscaloosa chapter…By Monday, 373 tickets had been distributed, said Jimmy Young, the SGA coordinator. “There will also be a lot of faculty and staff who will get tickets and we expect with the people invited by the two campaigns and the administration, we’ll have more than 700 people at the debate,” he said…

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to speak at UA Law School

A week from today Attorney General Eric Holder will be at the University of Alabama to speak at an event celebrating the 50th anniversary of Harper Lee’s book “To Kill a Mockingbird. The event happens next Tuesday at the University of Alabama law school, which Lee attended in the late 1940s. Attorney General Holder is married to Dr. Sharon Malone, whose sister Vivian tried to register for classes at Alabama in 1963 and was blocked by Governor George Wallace.

Students gather information at study abroad fair

Students interested in studying abroad in London, France, Italy and many other countries could learn about the opportunities available at the study abroad fair in the Ferguson Center on Sept. 13. “There are different ways students can go abroad through UA faculty-led programs, exchange programs and affiliate companies,” said Brittnay McMillian, study abroad advisor with the Capstone International academics program. “The relationship we have with the affiliates expand the opportunities and options students have to visit different countries.” The study abroad fair is held every semester to give students the opportunity to gather information, she said, and there are always information sessions in the Capstone International office that can be held for students…
Wireless Internet comes to The Strip

…The University and the Technology Council of the West Alabama Chamber of Commerce will collaborate on a two-year experiment to provide wireless Internet access to the area spanning from Bryant-Denny Stadium to Reed Street…the University has agreed to pay for the hardware that has been installed on store windows and roofs, and AT&T has stepped forward to sponsor the bandwidth for the two-year experiment…
“Screwtape” hits the Allen Bales Theatre

The classic tale of good versus evil will be played out in the UA department of theatre and dance’s first production of the 2010-2011 season. “Screwtape” is a play by James Forsyth that the cast calls a dark, intelligent comedy. The play, directed by graduate student Karen Baker, will premiere Monday, Sept. 20 in the Allen Bales Theatre at 7:30 p.m…
Classical Indian dancer to perform at UA

A yoga guru and professional classical dancer from India will perform a traditional dance tonight from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Ferguson Center Theater. Dr. Vasundhara Doraswamy’s performance, Dancing to the Deities, is an example of the classical dance known as Bharatanatyam…The event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by UA Asian Studies, Capstone International Services, the department of theatre and dance, the International Honors Program and New College. Doraswamy will also offer yoga workshops at the Capstone College of Nursing building, Room 1008, today from 9-10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Attendees must bring their own yoga mats.
