Project Beyond program releases findings
Natchez (Miss.) Democrat – July 22
…An offshoot of the Reading First federal program, Project Beyond was established in Natchez in 2007 through a grant partnership between the Natchez-Adams School District and the University of Alabama…Compared to a control group kindergartners who were not exposed to the program, Project Beyond graduates scored better at the beginning of the school year in every category except “initial sound fluency.” However, by mid-year testing, Project Beyond children surpassed the control group in the initial sound fluency category. End-of-the-year testing revealed Project Beyond graduates scored higher than the control group in every category…Gales said Rochelle Dail from The University of Alabama College of Education catered the Project Beyond program to Prince Street Daycare, Holy Family and Thompson Center Head Start based on the qualifications and needs of the students. Dail was awarded the $3.5 million, three-year grant in partnership with the Natchez schools despite competition with approximately 200 applicants. Only 32 similar grants were awarded nationally…

Transportation Center researches bus seat belts

The University Transportation Center for Alabama is in the final stages of research and calculations for their study assessing the impact of seat belts in school buses, said Dan Turner, professor of civil engineering and principal researcher on the team. Turner said the group expects to have the completed reports available on Sept. 30. According to a press release, the University is the first institution to carry out comprehensive research of this kind…

Discovering Alabama series wins Emmy award

Discovering Alabama,” a nature television series produced by the University of Alabama’s Museum of Natural History and Center for Public Television and Radio, received an Emmy Award in the 2010 National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences southeast competition, a University press release stated. Doug Phillips, creator, executive producer and host of the series; Wendy Reid, Center for Public Television and Radio producer; and Roger Reid, writer, producer and director, won for their work on the episode “Discovering Alabama: Alabama in Space,” the press release stated…

UA students prepare high school students

The University of Alabama Center for Ethics and Social Responsibility partnered with the programs Impact Alabama and A+ CollegeReady to create a service-learning course in which current college students tutor high school students in subjects such as chemistry and calculus for three weeks in July in order to prepare them for the academic demands college courses pose… “The college students agreed to spend a week learning how to tutor and guide the students in math and science, biology, chemistry and calculus, currently, and then the actual tutoring is for the three following weeks,” Olivia Grider, research project coordinator for the UACESR said. “This is through the A+ CollegeReady program, (which is) working hard to serve underserved high schools in the Birmingham and Huntsville areas.”…

UA provides student job opportunities

…Don Simmons, the University’s associate director of student financial aid, said the program employs around 650 students per year…For students who cannot qualify for the Federal Work-Study Program or who qualified but were not given a job, Simmons said the University offers another employment service through myBama. This program employs about 4,000 students, said Brandi Moses, recruitment coordinator for the University…

Three earn National Merit Scholarships
Tuscaloosa News – July 22
Three Tuscaloosa County residents have won college-sponsored 2010 National Merit Scholarships. The winners were Julia Barton, a student at Northridge High School, Dylan Sandy at Holy Spirit Catholic High School and Kevin Wu, a student at the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science in Mobile. Barton will attend the University of Alabama to study medicine and marine biology. Sandy will study psychology at UA. Wu will study finance at New York University…
