Business classes are about more than profit

…At the University of Alabama, juniors in the business school’s honors program spent this semester examining sustainability as it pertains to their campus…A look at computer labs, for example, found that computers run continuously even when not in use. But if programmable timers were installed in just the arts and science computer labs, so that the computers would switch off 30 minutes after the labs close and switch on 30 minutes before they reopen, the electricity savings would be $8,000 a year. The students also suggested replacing the conventional hand dryers and paper towels in restrooms with Dyson Airblade hand dryers…Management professor James Cashman, who oversaw the honors course, said he liked the students’ proposals. “My assessment is that one of the great thrills of an old professor is to see students do something that’s a value for the community and do it with such a joy. It is very refreshing to see young people put such an effort into such a worthwhile goal.” Tim Leopard, UA’s assistant vice president for construction and administration, who listened to the students’ presentation, said some of the suggestions have been done in some buildings and others are being studied…

UA has highest graduation rate among colleges in the state

The report shows most students who enter college as full-time freshmen take at least six years to earn a bachelor’s degree. Only about 55 percent graduate at all. The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa has the state’s highest graduation rate at 65 percent. Auburn university’s graduation rate is 63 percent. Meanwhile, the University of West Alabama has the state’s lowest graduation rate at 20 percent.

Alabama athletics honors academic and community outreach standouts

The University of Alabama athletics department hosted its annual Student-Athlete Academic Achievement Awards Banquet on Monday night in “The Zone” located in Bryant-Denny Stadium. Women’s cross country and men’s tennis were honored as the teams with the highest grade point averages. Women’s cross country posted a 3.68 GPA while the men’s tennis team earned a 3.26. Senior gymnast Kassi Price and junior quarterback Greg McElroy were named the winners of the Paul W. Bryant Award given annually to the top male and female student-athlete…
