UA student conducts research using submarine

Through swift, freezing currents, far below where light can penetrate or any human could survive, UA graduate student Robin Cobb will direct a remotely operated submarine through deep-ocean waters at 2,000 to 3,000 feet below the surface. Cobb, a graduate student from Harvest studying marine science, will explore these barely known depths aboard a research ship with a team of other scientists participating in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration deep-sea ecosystems study in the Atlantic Gulf Stream off the coast of Savannah, Ga. Fred Andrus, assistant professor of geological sciences and Cobb’s advisor, has participated in six previous NOAA deep-sea study voyages, and will join Cobb as a part of the research team again on this year’s expedition…
Honors College discusses ways to increase student involvement

Members of the UA Honors College met Wednesday evening in Nott Hall to discuss ideas that might encourage more student involvement in the college. Anna Foley, a Freshman Experience intern and member of the Honors College advisory board, said the Honors College is creating a structure for student involvement and governance. Foley said the purpose of the new structure is to bring together all the activities that already occur in the college and to create a formal way for students to become involved in the Honors College…The Honors College has approximately 4,000 students and is one of the largest colleges on campus, which was a main reason the advisory board wanted to add the structure, Foley added. “It only makes sense that we would have some way to further their learning experiences with these activities,” Foley said.
Rickman shares screenwriting advice

…Tom Rickman… the Academy Award-nominated screenwriter of 1980’s “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” spoke to a crowd of students Wednesday night in Gorgas Library. Rickman, who is working on a project that is in the negotiation stage, took a few days off at the request of longtime friend Billy Field. “It means a lot to me personally that he would take time out of his life and do this,” said Field, a filmmaker and faculty member at the University…
Private-Firm Pensions Face Deadline for Funding Level

Alabama designer eliminated from Project Runway

Fashion design reality show “Project Runway” lost its Southern charm this past week, after contestant Anthony L. Williams from Alabama was eliminated. But Williams said he still accomplished something during his time on the show. “It surprised me that I made it to the top,” he said. “As of now, no matter what happens, I’m the only person to have represented the University of Alabama. I have laid the foundation for others from Alabama. The world’s eyes are now open, and people know there’s talent in the South.”…
Storytellers spin tales at festival

…that’s what the second annual Black Warrior Storytelling Festival wants to preserve. “We are celebrating the art of story-telling through the spoken word,” said Courtney Marr, a University of Alabama senior from Mobile working with Creative Campus, the organization that presented the festival. “We have storytellers from around the state.”
